Freakwater, an American alternative country band from Louisville, Kentucky, was founded in 1989 by Janet Beveridge Bean and Catherine Irwin. The duo's unique blend of harmony and melody in dissonant country-folk quickly garnered attention. Their album, Freakwater, was released the same year they formed. In 1993, they released their album, Feels Like the Third Time. The band continued to release albums, including Old Paint (1995), Dancing Under Water (1997), and Springtime (1998). Notable singles from this period include "South of Cincinnati" (1995) and "Hellbound" (1999). Freakwater's music often featured collaborations with other musicians, including members of Califone during their 2005 tour for the album Thinking of You. In 2016, they released Scheherazade on Bloodshot Records. The band has also been involved in various side projects and charity performances, such as Freakons with Jon Langford and Sally Timms of the Mekons to support Kentuckians for the Commonwealth.
