The High Level Ranters

The High Level Ranters, a Northumbrian traditional musical group, were founded in 1964 at the Bridge Folk Club in Newcastle upon Tyne. They took their name from this location and the Cheviot Ranters, a famous dance band. The High Level Ranters pioneered the revival of the Northumbrian smallpipes, featuring the instrument prominently in their performances. Notable members included Alistair Anderson, Johnny Handle, Colin Ross, Jim Hall, Forster Charlton, John Doonan, Pete Wood, and Lou Killen. Their early albums, including The Lads Of Northumbria (1969) and Keep Yer Feet Still Geordie Hinnie (1970), introduced many musicians to traditional music from the North East. The band was featured twice on BBC Radio 1's John Peel show in October 1972 and July 1974.
