Maria Somerville is an Irish musician, DJ, and songwriter known for her ethereal blend of dream pop, ambient textures, and traditional Irish influences. Hailing from Connemara on Ireland's west coast, she grew up immersed in the region's rich musical heritage, with family members often performing classic Irish ballads. Her early musical education included learning guitar from her brother and exploring jazz improvisations with a neighbour, experiences that shaped her experimental approach to music. After moving to Dublin to study sound engineering, she released her debut album, All My People, in 2019. The album, characterised by its lo-fi production and introspective themes, drew comparisons to artists like Grouper and showcased her ability to merge folk traditions with contemporary soundscapes. Returning to Connemara, she found inspiration in her homeland's natural beauty, leading to the creation of her second album, Luster, released in 2025 under the 4AD label. This work features collaborations with Irish musicians such as harpist Róisín Berkeley and Lankum's Ian Lynch, further enriching her sonic palette. The album has been praised for its atmospheric depth and emotional resonance. In addition to her recording projects, Somerville hosts the Early Bird Show on NTS Radio, where she curates a selection of ambient and experimental tracks, reflecting her broad musical interests.
