Teneil Laetitia Throssell, known professionally as HAAi, was born in Karratha, Western Australia. She moved to Sydney due to its punk rock scene and later relocated to London in 2011 with bassist Ash Moss, forming the psychedelic-rock band Dark Bells. HAAi's interest in electronic music began after visiting Berlin's Berghain club, leading her to become a resident DJ at Ridley Road Market Bar. She first gained attention as part of the psychedelic band Dark Bells before transitioning to DJing in the mid-2010s. Her energetic, genre-blurring sets at venues like Phonox in London, where she held a residency from 2016 to 2018, established her reputation in the UK electronic scene. Her first EP, DaDaDa, was released in 2017. In 2018, she performed at major festivals including Glastonbury and Field Day, and her BBC Essential Mix was named the best of the year. In 2019, she released the EP Systems Up, Windows Down on Mute Records, followed by Put Your Head Above the Parakeets (2020), showcasing her distinctive mix of warm, distorted textures, vocal experimentation, and club-ready rhythms. HAAi became a resident DJ for BBC Radio 1 in late 2019 and signed with Mute Records, releasing her debut album Baby, We're Ascending (2022), which featured collaborations with Jon Hopkins and Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip) and was acclaimed for its euphoric yet introspective sound design. In 2025, HAAi released her second album, HUMANiSE, through Mute, expanding her sound toward more vocal-driven, conceptually humanist electronic music blending choirs, synthetic voices, and emotional techno-pop elements.
