DIIV is an American indie rock band from Brooklyn, New York, formed in 2011 by Zachary Cole Smith (vocals, guitar), principal songwriter. The line-up initially comprising Smith, Andrew Bailey (guitar), Devin Ruben Perez (bass) and Colby Hewitt (drums) has evolved over time. Their music blends shoegaze, dream pop and post-punk, characterized by reverberating guitars, ethereal atmospheres and melancholy melodies. Their debut album, Oshin (2012), was hailed for its luminous, dreamy aesthetic. In July 2013, multi-instrumentalist Colin Caulfield joined the quartet on keyboards and guitar, while Colby Hewitt left the band in 2015 and was replaced by Ben Newman. In 2016, DIIV released Is the Is Are, a darker, more introspective album. Early the following year, Smith announced he was taking a break to undergo medical treatment, resulting in the cancellation of the European tour. At the end of 2017, it was Devin Ruben Perez's turn to be excluded from the band following inappropriate messages. Colin Caulfield then switched to bass. Back in 2018, DIIV worked the following spring on the more aggressive-toned album Deceiver (2019), reaching number 177 on the Billboard 200. On the tour that follows in 2023, after the pandemic, DIIV performs in stadiums in support of Depeche Mode. The band signs with Fantasy Records and records with producer Chris Coady the album Frog in Boiling Water, named after the novel The Story of B by Daniel Quinn.
