Formed while still at Clydebank High School, the four members of of the band originally went by the name of Vortex Motion before settling on Wet Wet Wet, taken from Scritti Politti song "Getting, Havin' and Holdin'". The band's early sound was a blend of all the influences on each member, helped by rehearsals in Graeme Clark's mother's kitchen. They scored a record deal with PolyGram in 1985 and released their debut single "Wishing I Was Lucky" two years later, which broke into the UK top 10. The group's debut album Popped in Souled Out went on to be a success, spawning further hit singles, including "Sweet Little Mystery" and "Angel Eyes". However, it wasn't until a 1988 cover of The Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends" that the band recorded their first Number 1 single, following this up with two further releases, the EP The Memphis Sessions (1988) and the album Holding Back the River (1989). Into the 1990s, things looked to be going great guns as the Wets released their fourth offering High on the Happy Side (1992), but their most successful single to date was yet to come. In 1994, the group notched up an impressive 15 weeks atop the singles chart with Troggs' cover "Love Is All Around", cementing their following until the turn of the millennium when the group split. The group subsequently reformed in 2004 and released the album Timeless (2007), followed by The Journey (2021), with their new singer Kevin Simm, formerly of Liberty X. In October 2025, they released acoustic versions of their hits in Strings Attached.
