Johnny Hates Jazz

Johnny Hates Jazz is a British pop band formed in London in 1985 by Clark Datchler (vocals, keyboards), Calvin Hayes (keyboards, drums) and Mike Nocito (bass, guitar). Their style combines sophisticated pop, catchy melodies and the smooth production characteristic of the late 1980s. Signed to Virgin Records, they achieved international success with their first major single, "Shattered Dreams " (1987), which reached number 5 on the UK charts and number 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1988. Other top 20 hits followed, including "I Don't Want to Be a Hero" (1987), "Turn Back the Clock " (1987), "Heart of Gold" (1988), and "Don't Say It's Love " (1988). Their debut album, Turn Back the Clock (1988), reached Number 1 in the UK and several European countries, earning multi-platinum certifications. Shortly after release, Clark Datchler left the band, replaced by Phil Thornalley (ex-The Cure), but the band enjoyed less success with Tall Stories (1991). The band then split up, before reforming in 2009 with Datchler and Nocito, releasing the albums Magnetized (2013) and Wide Awake (2020), and continuing to perform live on tour.
