Wednesday

Formed in Asheville, North Carolina, in 2017, Wednesday revolves around singer/guitarist Karly Hartzman and her partner and collaborator MJ Lenderman (guitar). Rounded out by Xandy Chelmis (pedal steel guitar), Ethan Baechtold (bass) and Alan Miller (drums), the alternative rock band practices shoegaze and noise rock genres like country and, in its early days, bedroom pop. After a self-released debut album in 2018, Yep Definitely, came I Was Trying to Describe You to Someone (2020), Twin Plagues (2021) and Moving the Leaves Instead of Piling 'Em Up (2022), a collection of country covers with a noisy rock twist. The critically acclaimed follow-up Rat Saw God(2023) is followed by the surprise hit Elderberry Wine (2025), charting at No. 11 on the Top 40 Radio Adult Alternative Songs chart. The album Bleeds, released on Dead Oceans on September 19, 2025, reinforces the Southern gothic sound explored in Rat Saw God, with rawly emotional tracks like "Wound Up Here (By Holdin On)" and "Pick Up That Knife", showing a more direct writing style and an evolution in Karly Hartzman's style. Another track from the album, "Townies", reaches #27 on the Radio Adult Alternative Songs chart.
