Vinicius Cantuaria

Well-versed in several music genres such as jazz, rock, and bossa nova, Brazilian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Vinicius Cantuaria was born on April 29, 1951, in the city of Manaus. He spent most of his childhood in Rio de Janeiro and was a member of the rock groups O Terço and Banda Atômica before rising to fame with the hit single "Lua e Estrela," included in Caetano Veloso's 1981 album Outras Palavras. Only a year later, he released his eponymous studio debut, which enjoyed great popularity in Brazil thanks to the sensuous R&B-tinged track "Coisa Linda." However, it was the slick pop of "Só Você" (1984) that finally catapulted him to stardom, topping the local charts for months on end and spawning an even more successful version by singer Fabio Jr. over a decade later. Following a series of well-received albums and a tour with Chico Buarque, Vinicius Cantuaria moved to New York and became involved in the city's downtown jazz scene, collaborating with artists like Arto Lindsay, Bill Frisell, Brian Eno, and David Byrne. Released in 1996, his album Sol na Cara is credited with sparking an interest in neo-Brazilian music among English-speaking audiences. Featuring a mix of previously released material as well as a handful of bossa nova standards, the album Samba Carioca arrived in 2011 and featured cameos by MPB legends Marcos Valle and Liminha. Vinicius Canta Antonio Carlos Jobim, his tribute to the iconic Brazilian composer, came out in 2015 and was followed by the 2022 LP Naus, a collaborative effort with singer Zeca Baleiro. Recorded as a power trio with Italian musicians Paolo Andriolo and Roberto Rossi, 2024's Psychedelic Rio found Vinicius Cantuaria going back to his roots, embracing electric instruments to produce an intoxicating blend of MPB and psychedelic rock music.
