Ulver

Ulver, a Norwegian experimental electronica band, was founded in 1993 in Oslo by vocalist Kristoffer Rygg. Their early works, such as debut album Bergtatt: Et Eeventyr i 5 Capitler, were categorized as folklore-influenced black metal. The band's initial breakthrough came with the release of their first demo cassette, Vargnatt, in November 1993. Ulver signed with Century Media for their third album, The Mardrigal of Night, issued in February 1997, marking their international debut. Following discord with Century Media, Rygg formed his own imprint, Jester Records, in 1998. Notable releases include Kveldssanger and Childhood's End. Ulver has performed at prestigious venues such as Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet, and have sold over half a million records. They won Album of the Year at the Oslo Awards for Shadows of the Sun in 2008. Thereafter, Ulver entered a period of intense stylistic transformation with the album Wars of the Roses (2010), which blended chamber music, progressive rock influences, and electronic textures. That same year, they performed one of their most celebrated concerts at the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet in Oslo. This performance—later released as The Norwegian National Opera (2011)—showcased the band’s evolution into a fully realized live ensemble and marked a milestone in their public re-emergence after years of studio-focused work. The band followed up with Childhood’s End (2012), a collection of psychedelic rock covers from the late 1960s. In 2014, Ulver partnered with drone-metal pioneers Sunn O))) for the joint release Terrestrials. They continued to pursue experimental sound design on ATGCLVLSSCAP (2016), followed by The Assassination of Julius Caesar (2017), in which Ulver surprised both fans and critics by embracing synth-pop, darkwave, and electronic dance elements. Further releases include the EP Sic Transit Gloria Mundi (2017), and the albums Flowers of Evil (2020), Scary Muzak (2021), Liminal Animals (2024), and Neverland (2025).
