Tim Curry

Timothy James Curry was born on April 19, 1946, in Grappenhall, Cheshire, England. Classically trained as a singer during childhood, he studied English and drama at the University of Birmingham before making his professional stage debut in the London production of Hair in 1968. In 1973, Tim Curry originated the role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter in Richard O’Brien’s The Rocky Horror Show, performing songs including “Sweet Transvestite” and “I’m Going Home.” He reprised the role in Los Angeles, on Broadway, and in the 1975 film The Rocky Horror Picture Show, whose soundtrack became central to the production’s enduring cult status. After recording an unreleased album with producer Lou Adler in 1976, Tim Curry signed with A&M Records and issued the Bob Ezrin-produced Read My Lips in 1978. Its eclectic selection included interpretations of the Beatles’ “I Will” and Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “Sloe Gin.” Tim Curry toured North America and Europe between 1978 and 1980 and followed the album with the more original-material-driven Fearless in 1979. Produced by Michael Kamen and Dick Wagner, it reached number 53 on the Billboard 200 and featured “I Do the Rock,” Tim Curry’s only Billboard Hot 100 entry, peaking at number 91. He also contributed backing vocals to Carly Simon’s album Spy that year. Tim Curry earned his first Tony Award nomination for playing Mozart in Amadeus in 1980, then released his third solo album, Simplicity, in 1981. Combining new wave, rock, reggae, and pop, it included “Working on My Tan” and covers of “She’s Not There” and “Take Me, I’m Yours.” His subsequent career concentrated on acting, with prominent appearances in Annie, Clue, Legend, It, Home Alone 2, and Muppet Treasure Island. In 1990, he performed as the Prosecutor in Roger Waters’ large-scale production of The Wall – Live in Berlin, and he received a Daytime Emmy for voicing Captain Hook in Peter Pan and the Pirates. Further Tony nominations followed for My Favorite Year and Monty Python’s Spamalot. The 1976 Lou Adler sessions were finally issued as …From the Vaults in 2010. After suffering a major stroke in 2012, Tim Curry continued with selected voice roles, screen appearances, and commemorative events, including a 2020 reading of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. He returned to film with a cameo in Stream in 2024 and published his memoir, Vagabond, in 2025. Tim Curry died at his Los Angeles home on August 25, 2026, aged 80.
