The World is a Beautiful Place & I am No Longer Afraid to Die was formed in 2009 in Willimantic, Connecticut. The band initially consisted of Tyler Bussey, Nicole Shanholtzer, Thomas Diaz, and Josh Cyr. Their music was characterized by an experimental and atmospheric take on the emo genre, drawing influences from post-rock and post-hardcore. Their early releases included Demo 2010 (2010), Formlessness (2010), Josh is Dead (2011), and "Gig Life" (2012). In 2013, they released their debut full-length LP, Whenever, If Ever, which received generally positive reviews and charted at number 3 on the Billboard Vinyl charts. The band underwent several roster changes, including the departure of Thomas Diaz due to medical issues. Their subsequent albums included Harmlessness (2015), Always Foreign (2017), and Illusory Walls (2021). Founding member Thomas Diaz died unexpectedly in 2018.
