The Glove

The Glove was a British new‑wave duo formed in 1983 by Steven Severin, bassist of Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Robert Smith, guitarist and vocalist of The Cure. The collaboration emerged from a friendship that began in 1979 when the two musicians met at a Throbbing Gristle concert in London, and their joint efforts culminated in the release of a single album, Blue Sunshine, on 9 September 1983 under the independent label. The album, produced by Steven Severin and Robert Smith with Merlin Griffiths, combined psychedelic rock with orchestral strings and electronic keyboards, and featured Robert Smith’s vocals on two tracks, "Mr Alphabet Says" and "Perfect Murder", a concession secured despite contractual restrictions from Robert Smith’s manager, Chris Parry. Two singles were issued from the record: "Like An Animal" in August 1983, which peaked at Number 52 on the UK Singles Chart, and "Punish Me With Kisses" in November 1983, which reached Number 97. The Glove disbanded after the album’s release, as Robert Smith returned to full‑time duties with The Cure, while Steven Severin continued with Siouxsie and the Banshees. A remastered deluxe edition of Blue Sunshine was issued in 2006 by Universal, adding demo tracks and previously unreleased material, reaffirming the duo’s brief contribution to early 1980s British new‑wave music.
