Clan of Xymox

Clan of Xymox originated in Nijmegen, Netherlands, founded in 1981 by Ronny Moorings and Anke Wolbert. The duo relocated to Amsterdam and released their self‑produced debut Subsequent Pleasures in 1981, followed by the 1985 self‑titled album Clan of Xymox under 4AD, which included the track "7th Time" that earned two Peel Sessions in 1985. In 1987 the single "Blind Hearts" marked the band’s breakthrough, and the 1989 album Twist of Shadows sold 300 000 copies, with singles such as "Obsession" and "Imagination" charting on Billboard’s Alternative and Hot 100 lists. After signing with PolyGram, the 1991 release Phoenix did not meet expectations, leading to the departure of Wolbert and Pieter Nooten. Moorings continued under the Clan of Xymox name, issuing albums Metamorphosis (1992), Headclouds (1993), and Hidden Faces (1997) on independent labels, while touring extensively across Europe and North America. The 1999 album Creatures and the 2001 Notes from the Underground (reaching number 2 on Germany’s DAC) reinforced the group’s presence. Subsequent releases-including Breaking Point (2006), Emily (2009), Darkest Hour (2011), and Days of Black (2017)-were issued through Trisol and Metropolis, maintaining a consistent output.
