The Black Mages

The Black Mages was a Japanese instrumental rock band formed in 2002 by video game composers Nobuo Uematsu, Kenichiro Fukui, and Tsuyoshi Sekito. The group arranged compositions from the Final Fantasy series in a hard rock and progressive metal style. Their eponymous debut album, The Black Mages (2003), reached number 43 on the Oricon charts. The band expanded to a sextet with the addition of Keiji Kawamori, Michio Okamiya, and Arata Hanyuda. They released the studio albums The Black Mages II: The Skies Above (2004), which featured their first original song “Blue Blast ~Winning the Rainbow” (2004), and The Black Mages III: Darkness and Starlight (2008). They also contributed the track “Advent: One-Winged Angel” (2005) to the film Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. The group disbanded in 2010.
