Steve Gunn

Steve Gunn is an American singer, composer and guitarist known for his work in contemporary folk, psychedelic rock and experimental music. Born in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, on April 20, 1977, he began his musical career in the late 1990s as a guitarist exploring improvised and instrumental forms, collaborating with artists such as Kurt Vile (notably with the Violators), Mike Cooper and John Truscinski. He made a name for himself as a solo artist with a series of albums blending complex picking, blues, raga, modal jazz and American rock influences. His distinctive style combines contemplative, poetic lyrics with fluid, hypnotic guitar, often in open tuning. Starting with the album Time Off (2013), Gunn gained notoriety for his more accessible and structured songwriting, continued with Way Out Weather (2014), Eyes on the Lines (2016), The Unseen in Between (2019) and Other You (2021), hailed for their rich sound and nuanced production. An active live performer, he tours solo and in groups, often with musicians from the indie, folk and experimental scenes. Based in Brooklyn, Steve Gunn is now recognized as one of the most singular guitarists on the American independent folk scene, at the crossroads of tradition and sonic innovation. He collaborates with Riley Walker on Drzwi Doors (2021), Amby Downs on the ambient Looming Change / Building Fabric (2023), David Moore on Reflections Vol. 1: Let the Moon Be a Planet (2023) and Live in London (2024), and John Truscinski and Bill Nace on Glass Band (2023). He records two solo folk EPs, Nakama (2022) and Clean Floor (2024), before continuing in the ambient/drone vein with Music for Writers (2025).
