Australian alternative rock band, Something for Kate, formed in 1994 in Melbourne. The group initially consisted of Julian Carroll on bass guitar, Paul Dempsey on lead vocals and guitar, and Clint Hyndman on drums. They played their first gig on September 12th, 1994 at the Punter's Club in Melbourne and built a varied fan base, recording a demo tape that sold out of multiple pressings. In 1995, Sony Music's A&R Chris Dunn signed them to the Murmur label. Their debut EP The Answer to Both Your Questions was released in May 1996 and garnered critical acclaim. In June 1998, Stephanie Ashworth joined the band as bassist and keyboardist, replacing Toby Ralph. The group's first studio album, Beautiful Sharks, was released in 1999. Subsequent albums included Echolalia (2001), The Official Fiction (2003), and Desert Lights (2006), with the latter two topping the ARIA Albums Chart. Notable singles include "Monsters" (2001) and "Déjà Vu" (2003), which went to number 15 and 19 respectively, on the ARIA Singles Chart. The band received a total of 11 nominations for ARIA Music Awards in 1999, 2001, and 2003. After a six-year break, the band reunited in 2012 to record Leave Your Soul to Science in Dallas with producer John Congleton. The album reached number 5 on the ARIA Albums Chart and featured singles including “Survival Expert”, “Miracle Cure”, and “Star-Crossed Citizens”. Following another hiatus, they returned in 2020 with their seventh studio album The Modern Medieval, which debuted at number 5 and included the singles “Situation Room”, “Waste Our Breath”, “Supercomputer”, and “Come Back Before I Come Back to My Senses”.
