A melodic hard rock and alternative metal quartet formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 2001, Shinedown's core members are vocalist Brent Smith (born in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1978), guitarist Jasin Todd, bassist Brad Stewart and drummer Barry Kerch. Rewarded with a platinum disc in 2003 for their debut album Leave a Whisper (#53 in the U.S.), the Atlantic-signed band continued to climb the alternative rock charts with several tracks from their second album Us and Them (2005, #23). However, it was after a personnel reshuffle that brought in Zach Myers (guitar, piano) and Eric Bass (bass, guitar, piano), that Shinedown entered a new dimension, its success expanding with the album Sound of Madness (2008), ranked #4 on the Billboard 200 and driven by the hard rock ballad "Second Chance" (ranked #7 on the Hot 100). After a lengthy tour that resulted in the CD and DVD Somewhere in the Stratosphere (2011), Brent Smith's band maintained their worldwide reputation with their fourth studio album Amaryllis (2012), ranked #4 in the US and #18 in the UK. This was followed by Threat to Survival (2015, #6 in the U.S., #13 in the U.K.) and the concept album Attention Attention (2018, #5 in the U.S., #8 in the U.K.), produced by songwriter Eric Bass after touring with Iron Maiden. In 2022, twenty years after their debut, Shinedown did not relinquish their place at the forefront of hard rock with the album Planet Zero (#5 in the U.S., #4 in the U.K.). After releasing their own brand of sauces, the band returned to the studio to produce an eclectic eighth album, Ei8ht, released in May 2026 and revealing their diverse facets.
