Sam Morton

Sam Morton is a musical duo formed by renowned actress and director Samantha Morton and producer Richard Russell, head of the XL Recordings label. The project was born in 2020, after Russell heard the actress on BBC's Desert Island Discs and was deeply moved by her voice and story. This encounter gave birth to a collaboration that evolved from exchanges of sketches and ideas to completed studio recordings. Their music blends ambient, trip-hop, dream-pop, downtempo, dub and spoken word, combining Samantha Morton's ethereal, intimate voice with Richard Russell's haunting, minimalist production. Sam Morton debuted with limited-edition vinyl singles in 2023 such as "Hungerhill Road / Ghosts Are Dancing" and "Supplication / Headbouncing", then released digital singles in 2024: "Cry Without End" and "Let's Walk in the Night", featuring Alabaster DePlume. The album Daffodils & Dirt was released in June 2024 by XL Recordings and features twelve tracks, including "Broxtowe Girl" with guest appearances by Ali Campbell (UB40).
