Robert Carr, born February 10, 1938 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Johnny Mitchell, born December 16, 1936 in the Bronx, New York, formed the American doo-wop duo Robert & Johnny in the late 1950s. Raised in the Bronx, both singers developed their vocal styles while performing locally, and their first recording contract was secured with Old Town Records. Their debut single, “We Belong Together”, released in 1958, reached number 12 on the U.S. R&B Singles chart and number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100, establishing the duo as a notable act in the emerging rock-and-roll scene. Subsequent releases such as “I Believe in You” maintained their presence on the charts, while the duo continued to write most of their material. Over the next decade, Robert & Johnny released a series of singles, many later reissued on compilations such as La Grande Storia Del Rock 79 (1982) and We Belong Together (2012), and performed alongside contemporaries like The Belmonts and Los Lobos, who later covered their work. The duo disbanded in the early 1960s and Carr passed away on May 18, 1993.
