Pelican is an American instrumental post-metal band formed in 2001 in Chicago, Illinois, by Trevor de Brauw (guitar), Bryan Herweg (bass), Larry Herweg (drums) and Laurent Schroeder-Lebec (guitar). The band soon signed with independent label Hydra Head Records, run by Aaron Turner (Isis), and made a name for themselves with a self-titled EP in 2001. In 2003, they released their debut album, Australasia, which caught the attention of the underground scene. Their second album, The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw (2005), consolidated their reputation. This was followed by City of Echoes (2007) and What We All Come to Need (2009), their last album with Schroeder-Lebec, who gradually left the band after this period. Pelican continued with Dallas Thomas, replacing Schroeder-Lebec on guitar, and released Forever Becoming in 2013 via Southern Lord Records, then Nighttime Stories in 2019, before Lebec's return on Flickering Resonance (2025).
