Muroki Mbote Wa Githinji (born in 2001 in in Coromandel, New Zealand), known as Muroki, is a Kenyan-New Zealand reggae musician. Moving to Ragland, New Zealand with his family at a young age, Muroki began making music in high school, performing in duo act Cloak Bay, self-releasing two EPs in 2017: Digi Town and The Boogie Boys. While playing bass for New Zealand band Masaya, Muroki released debut single âFor Better or Worseâ, supporting best-selling artist Benee on her New Zealand tour in 2020. In April 2021, Muroki released his debut studio EP Dawn, with lead single âWavyâ certified Platinum and attracting considerable commercial success, followed by top 20 single âCrossroadsâ. In September, Muroki was invited to re-record âWavyâ as part of a government-sponsored initiative to promote the MÄori language, releasing the Te Reo version of "Rehurehu" which peaked at number 7 on the New Zealand Charts. Following this success, he released another two non-album singles in 2021, âSurfinâ and âStill Careâ (featuring New Zealand artist Nasaya), and on September 16, 2022 released his second EP Heading East, drawing upon a variety of genres including reggae, funk, roots and electronica with popular dance track âFind Meâ peaking at number 2 on the Hot 20 New Zealand Singles chart.
