Mötley Crüe is an American heavy metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1981 by bassist Nikki Sixx and drummer Tommy Lee, later joined by guitarist Mick Mars and vocalist Vince Neil; they became one of the defining bands of the 1980s glam metal and hard rock scene, known for their theatrical live shows, provocative image and hedonistic lifestyle. Their debut album, Too Fast for Love (1981), was followed by Shout at the Devil (1983), which brought them major commercial success with songs such as “Looks That Kill” and “Too Young to Fall in Love.” They consolidated their popularity with Theatre of Pain (1985), featuring “Smokin’ in the Boys Room” and “Home Sweet Home,” and Girls, Girls, Girls (1987), whose title track and “Wild Side” became major hits. Their biggest commercial success was Dr. Feelgood (1989), their first U.S. Number 1 album and a six-times-platinum release, producing hits including “Dr. Feelgood,” “Kickstart My Heart,” “Without You” and “Don’t Go Away Mad (Just Go Away).” The band entered the 1990s with Decade of Decadence (1991), a compilation that included new recordings, before Vince Neil left in 1992 and was replaced by John Corabi for the self-titled Mötley Crüe (1994). Neil returned for Generation Swine (1997), but the group subsequently went through further changes before reuniting its classic lineup in the early 2000s. They released New Tattoo (2000), the live album Carnival of Sins (2006) and Saints of Los Angeles (2008), their first studio album with the classic lineup since 1997. Mötley Crüe announced their retirement from touring in 2014 and embarked on a farewell tour, but reunited for further touring from 2019 onward. Their story was dramatized in the Netflix biopic The Dirt in 2019, based on the band's bestselling 2001 autobiography The Dirt: Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band. Mick Mars retired from touring with the band in 2022 and was replaced on guitar by John 5 in 2023. The group subsequently released the singles “Dogs of War” and “Cancelled” in 2024 and has continued performing and releasing archival material; in 2026, they launched a North American tour celebrating their 45th anniversary.
