Mandalay

Mandalay, a British trip-hop duo from the United Kingdom, was formed in 1995 by multi-instrumentalist Saul Freeman and multi-instrumentalist-composer-singer Nicola Hitchcock. After Freeman's previous band Thieves disbanded, he collaborated with Hitchcock to create Mandalay, inspired by the emerging trip-hop scene. Their debut single "Flowers Bloom" (1996) earned critical acclaim, leading to a full recording deal with V2 Music. The duo released their first album Empathy in 1997, which featured the track "This Life", used in Madonna's film The Next Best Thing. Mandalay gained further recognition when "Beautiful" was included on various chillout albums and used in Estee Lauder’s advertising campaign. Their second album Instinct, released in 2000, showcased a blend of jazz and classical influences. Mandalay disbanded in 2002 due to personal and professional differences between Freeman and Hitchcock.
