Malka Spigel

Malka Spigel is an Israeli musician and artist born on 19 July 1954 in Tel Aviv. She co-founded the Israeli-Belgian group Minimal Compact in 1981, pioneering a minimal post-punk and punk-funk sound that gained a significant European following. After marrying musician Colin Newman in 1986, Spigel moved to London in 1992 and established the swim ~ label. She expanded into visual arts following a 1996 installation at the Irish Museum of Modern Art and earned a fine art degree between 2000 and 2002. In 2004, she co-founded the ensemble Githead with Newman and Robin Rimbaud. Their albums include Headgit (2004) and Waiting for a Sign (2014). Her solo recording career includes the albums Rosh Ballata (1993), Every Day Is Like the First Day (2012), and Gliding (2014).
