A pioneer of jungle music, British DJ Lennie De Ice is best known for the genre's seminal track "We Are I.E.". Born Lenworth Green in London in 1970, he drew inspiration from the audacities of rapper Afrika Bambaataa and Mantronix to create a syncopated, bass-infused style of breakbeats, loops and sampling, rooted in Jamaican sound systems. He made a name for himself in 1987 alongside DJ ET at the London club The Dungeons, and appeared at rave parties at the height of the acid house wave. In 1988, he began work on the track "We Are I.E.", which would not be released until three years later on the Reel 2 Reel Productions label. Drawing on samples from The Winstons, 808 State, Chaba Fadela and Simon Harris, the track quickly caught on in the electronic sphere and was remixed several times, notably by R.I.P. Productions in 1997 and Distinctive Records, who made it a hit at no. 61 in the UK charts (no. 4 in the dance charts) in 1999. In 2022, the Hooj Choons label produced new versions. Lennie De Ice, also known as Body Snatcher, created the Armshouse Crew and Do or Die labels, which hosted his subsequent productions such as the Count the Action EP (1993), "Carnival 93" (with Timmi Magic), the Breaking New Ground EP (1993), "Well Terrible" (1994) and "Jack That" (1995). A digital compilation, Unreleased (Armshouse Dubplates), was released in 2010. Lennie De Ice died in December 2024 at the age of 54.
