Las Chicas del Can

Las Chicas del Can formed in the early 1980s in Santo Domingo under the direction of Wilfrido Vargas—originally conceived as Las Muchachas in the late 1970s by Belkis Concepción—and made their mark in Latin music with explosive merengue hits like “Juana la Cubana,” “El Negro No Puede,” and “La Media María” during the 1980s. The group evolved through multiple lineups, including the first generation featuring Miriam Cruz, Eunice Betances, Teresa Domínguez, and others, followed in the 1990s by a second generation with Michell Flores, Grissel Báez, and Florángel del Villar, who released albums such as Botando Chispas (1994) and Derramando Sueños (1996) before disbanding around 1999. In the mid-2000s, the group went through intermittent relaunches—most notably from 2007 to 2011—though those formations eventually dissolved. Subsequently, several nostalgic revivals have brought Las Chicas del Can back into the public eye: new music releases appeared in 2024–2025, including singles like “Él Está” (2024) and “Un Padre Fenomenal” (2025), while live performances—including a festival appearance in 2025—suggest the name’s resurgence and ongoing appeal.
