Kokolo, also known as the Kokolo Afrobeat Orchestra, is an American Afrobeat band from New York City's Lower East Side, formed in 2001 by songwriter/producer Ray Lugo. The band's name originated from a term used to describe non-Hispanic African descendants. Their debut album Fuss And Fight (2002) was recorded at Daptone Studios and released on AfroKings. Kokolo's second album, More Consideration (2004), featured more complex orchestrations and was released by Freestyle Records. This album allowed the band to perform on major stages worldwide, including the Montreal International Jazz Festival and Glastonbury Festival. Their third album, Love International (2007), incorporated elements of hip hop, dancehall, and Latin influences. Notable songs include "The Magnificent Seven" and "Afrika Man".
