Kathryn Joseph

Born on 31 December 1974 in Inverness, Kathryn Joseph is a critically acclaimed Scottish singer-songwriter known for her haunting, emotionally raw sound that blends dark folk with minimal piano arrangements and stark, poetic lyricism. She first garnered widespread attention with her 2015 debut album, Bones You Have Thrown Me and Blood I’ve Spilled, which won the prestigious Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) Award. Her distinctive voice—both tender and intense—became her hallmark, evoking comparisons to artists like Joanna Newsom and Anohni, while remaining wholly original. A master of intimacy and atmosphere, she continued to build on her singular style with From When I Wake the Want Is (2018) and For You Who Are the Wronged (2022), both exploring themes of trauma, survival, love, and power with unflinching honesty. Her work often features sparse instrumentation, centred around piano and subtle electronics, creating an immersive listening experience that feels almost sacred. She built further on this dark-folk style with her 2025 album WE WERE MADE PREY.
