Katatonia

Swedish multi-instrumentalists Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström founded Katatonia in 1991. The Scandinavian heavy metal band from Stockholm, Sweden, initially existed as a studio project of its two co-founders. As a duo, they released their debut EP Jhva Elohim Meth... The Revival in 1992 and bassist Guillaume Le Huche joined the group in time for Katatonia's debut album Dance of December Souls (1993). Guitarist Fredrik Norrman and singer Mikael Åkerfeldt were the next members of the band to appear on the 1996 album Brave Murder Day. Three years later, Dead End Kings became an international hit, reaching #12 in Sweden, #4 in Finland and the Top 40 in Austria, Germany and Norway. The album's follow-up, The Fall of Hearts, enjoyed similar popularity in 2016. After a short break, Katatonia released City Burials in 2020, which cracked the top 10 in Poland, Finland, Germany, Hungary and Portugal. Three years later, in 2023, the album Sky Void of Stars was released. In June 2025, Katatonia released another studio album, Nightmares as Extensions of the Waking State.
