Amon Amarth

Formed in 1992 in Tumba, Stockholm County, Sweden, Amon Amarth emerged from the former folk‑grindcore outfit Scum, with founding members Johan Hegg on vocals, Olavi Mikkonen on guitar, Ted Lundström on bass, and Nico Kaukinen on drums. The band’s early efforts included the 1993 demo Thor Arise and the 1996 mini‑album Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds, which attracted Metal Blade’s attention. Under that label, they released Once Sent from the Golden Hall (1998), The Avenger (1999), and the aggressive The Crusher (2001). A steady stream of releases followed: Versus the World (2002), Fate of Norns (2004), With Oden on Our Side (2006), Twilight of the Thunder God (2008) – which entered the U.S. Top 50 and reached number 6 in Germany – and Surtur Rising (2011). Collaborations with Lars Göran Petrov, Roope Latvala, and the cello‑driven band Apocalyptica enriched the 2013 album Deceiver of the Gods, noted for its shift toward heavy metal. The progressive concept record Jomsviking (2016) and Berserker (2019) continued the Viking‑mythic narrative, while The Great Heathen Army (2022) and The Allfather Awakens (2026) marked the band’s 30‑year legacy.
