James Alan Johnston, born on 19 June 1952 in Pocahontas, Arkansas, is an American composer and musician whose work is most closely associated with professional wrestling promotion WWE. After studying music and design at Hampshire College, Johnston began composing soundtracks for animated and industrial films before moving to television networks HBO and Showtime. In the midâ1980s, while living in Connecticut, he met Brian Penry, an art director for the World Wrestling Federation, and was hired by Vince McMahon to create entrance theme music for wrestlers. Johnstonâs first major breakthrough came with the 1995 release of WWF Full Metal: The Album, which set the stage for a prolific output of WWEâbranded compilations. Over the next two decades he produced and recorded albums such as WWE: The Music â ThemeAddict, Vol.â¯6 (2004), WWE: Anthology â The Attitude Era, Vol.â¯2 (2005), and WWE: The Music â Vol.â¯7 (2007), and released the single "WWE: Voices" (Randyâ¯Orton) featuring Rev Theory (2009). His compositions achieved significant commercial success, with WWF The Music, Volumeâ¯3 reaching platinum status in the United States and WWF The Music, Volumeâ¯4 climbing to number five on the Canadian Albums Chart. Johnston also collaborated with mainstream artists such as Motörhead, Disturbed, Kidâ¯Rock, and IceâT, expanding the reach of WWEâs musical catalog. In 2017, after 32 years, Johnston was released from WWE, and his legacy continues through the enduring popularity of the themes he created.
