Immature

Immature, latterly known as IMx, was an American R&B group that emerged from Los Angeles in the early 1990s and became one of the most successful youth-oriented R&B acts of the decade. The group was formed and managed by producer Chris Stokes, who discovered lead singer Marcus “Batman” Houston at a young age. The original lineup consisted of Marques Houston, Jerome “Romeo” Jones, and Kelton “LDB” Kessee, with Don “Half Pint” Santos joining shortly afterward to complete the quartet. Immature debuted in 1992 with the album On Our Worst Behavior, showcasing a New Jack Swing–influenced sound paired with playful, age-appropriate lyrics that resonated strongly with teenage audiences. Their breakthrough came with the 1994 album Playtyme Is Over, which featured the hit single “Never Lie,” a smooth, emotionally mature ballad that became their signature song and established them as serious contenders in 1990s R&B. Throughout the mid-1990s, Immature released several successful albums, including We Got It (1995) and The Journey (1997), producing popular tracks such as “We Got It,” “Feel the Funk,” and “Constantly.” As the members grew older, their music evolved toward a more mature R&B sound, addressing themes of relationships, heartbreak, and personal growth while maintaining their strong vocal harmonies. In 1999, the group rebranded as IMx to reflect their transition from teen idols to adult artists. Under the IMx name, they released albums like Introducing IMx (1999) and IMx (2001), which leaned into contemporary R&B with more polished production and mature lyrical content. Despite artistic growth, the group struggled to match the commercial success of their earlier years.
