Hamza El Din was an Egyptian Nubian composer, oud player, and vocalist born in 1929. He trained as an electrical engineer before studying music. El Din's appearance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1964 led to a recording contract and albums including Music of Nubia (1964) and The Oud (1965). His album Escalay: The Water Wheel was released in 1971. El Din collaborated with various artists, including Sandy Bull, the Grateful Dead, and the Kronos Quartet. He died in 2006.
