Leader of rock and Britpop band Super Furry Animals, Welshman Gruff Rhys (born Haverfordwest, July 18, 1970), broke free to record his first solo album Yr Atal Genhedlaeth (2005), sung entirely in Welsh, and in 2006 founded electro-pop duo Neon Neon with Boom Bip. On subsequent solo albums released between returns to his band, Gruff Rhys's alternative rock is tinged with folk, neo-psychedelia and electronic touches. He recorded the albums Candylion (2007), Hotel Shampoo (2011) and American Interior (2014) with various musicians and personalities such as Sean O'Hagan, Gorwel Owen, El Perro del Mar, Miles Kane, Andy Votel and Mike Mogis. In 2018, he changed musical direction with the album Babelsberg, influenced by the country and orchestral pop of the 1960s. Composer of the soundtracks to the films Set Fire to the Stars (2016) and The Almond & the Seahorse (2023), Gruff Rhys enlists the services of producer Muzi on Pang! (2019), followed by (Don't) Welcome the Plague as a Blessing: The Babelsberg Basement Files (2020), the psychedelic Seeking New Gods (2021) and Sadness Sets Me Free (2024).
