Great Big Sea was a Canadian folk rock band from Newfoundland and Labrador. The lineup included Alan Doyle, Séan McCann, Darrell Power, and Bob Hallett. They gained popularity performing energetic rock interpretations of traditional Newfoundland folk songs, including sea shanties. Their second album Up was released in 1995. In 1997, they reached the top ten of the Canadian RPM pop chart with âWhen I'm Up (I Can't Get Down)â. The band won the Entertainer of the Year award at the East Coast Music Awards for every year between 1996 and 2000. Great Big Sea officially retired, with former members Alan Doyle and Séan McCann continuing their solo careers.
