One of the great singers of Dutch variety and pop, Gerard Cox was a songwriter, composer, performer, guitarist, cabaret artist, actor and director, born in Rotterdam on March 6, 1940, and died in Mijnsheerenland on September 13, 2025. He began playing guitar in 1957 at the age of 17, but it was in 1961, at 21, that he officially launched his musical career. He quickly made a name for himself in the Netherlands and Flemish Belgium, notably with his first song "Jacqueline", and scored a huge hit in 1973 with "t Is weer voorbij die mooie zomer", which spent five weeks at No. 1 in the charts. Other local chart hits in the course of a long career include "1948 (Toen was geluk heel gewoon)" (1972), "Die goeie ouwe tijd" (No. 6 in 1974), " Een mooi verhaal " ( No. 2 in 1974), "Een mooi verhaal " (No. 1 in 1974) and " Een mooi zomer " (No. 1 in 1974). Een mooi verhaal" ("A beautiful story" by Michel Fugain, 1975), "Chrisje" (1978), "Die laaielichter" on the occasion of his comeback in 1987, "Effe eentje tussendoor..." (1987), "'n Lekker Hollands liedje" (1988) and "Nooit meer verkering" (1998). Notable studio albums include Gerard Cox (1968), Met blijdschap geven wij kennis (1969), Wat je zegt ben je zelf 1 & 2 (two volumes with Frans Halsema, 1974 and 1976), Aangenaam (1987), Leuk voor later (1993) and Andere noten (1998). In 2003, he collaborated again with Frans Haselma. He also appeared in numerous TV and film productions, making his name as an actor in the film Het Debuut (1977) and playing the lead role in the sitcom Toen Was Geluk Heel Gewoon for fifteen years. In August 2025, he announced that he had metastasized oesophageal cancer and refused all medical treatment. He died at the age of 85.
