Gentleman

Tilmann Otto, a.k.a. Gentleman, is one of Germany’s best-known reggae artists—yet he has never shied away from stylistic experimentation. Born on April 19, 1974, the Osnabrück native has lived in Cologne since he was one year old. After being expelled from school twice, he was drawn to Jamaica, where he discovered and fell in love with the musical genre he would later come to represent like no other. With singles like “Jah Jah Never Fail” and “Heat of the Night” , he offered a preview of his debut album Trodin On (all 1998), with which he impressively revived the Caribbean reggae sound in Germany. Following Journey to Jah (2002) came Confidence in 2004. The LP not only brought Gentleman his definitive breakthrough but also reached No. 1 on the German and Austrian album charts. The buzz the singer had generated by then also led to a collaboration with the reggae legends Toots & the Maytals: For their album True Love, which even won a Grammy , they released the joint single “Reggae Got Soul”. Otto, who—in addition to classic roots reggae—repeatedly incorporates elements of hip-hop and dancehall into his sound, released his fourth studio album, Another Intensity, in 2007. In 2010, he released the follow-up, Diversity, via Universal Music, which incorporated far more pop influences—a masterstroke that was rewarded with a No. 1 spot on the album charts in Germany and No. 2 in both Austria and Switzerland. Singles such as “It No Pretty” and “To the Top” were also successful releases. On the album front, Otto returned in 2013 with New Day Dawn. A quieter phase—during which a MTV Unplugged album was released in 2014 and, over the following years, single collaborations with reggae megastars like Sean Paul and Beenie Man appeared—was followed in 2020 by Blaue Stunde. On what is now his seventh solo album, Otto sings in German—a move that does nothing to diminish his relevance to the local music scene, as the record ultimately reaches No. 10 on the album charts. In December 2022, Gentleman released another English-language album, Mad World, which reached No. 24 on the German charts. At the end of August 2026, the reggae artist released another album, Gratitude. With a No. 10 ranking, the singer returned to the German Top 10.
