The original line-up included Jim Wood on keyboards, Rodney Browning Cravens on lead guitar, JR Richards on vocals and guitar, George Pendergast on drums and percussion, and Scot Alexander on bass. Dishwalla's breakthrough came with their debut album Pet Your Friends, released in August 1995 via A&M Records. The album featured the hit single "Counting Blue Cars", which reached significant chart positions and won multiple awards, including a Billboard award for Best Rock Song of 1996. Following the success of Pet Your Friends, Dishwalla released their second studio album, And You Think You Know What Life's About, in August 1998. The band contributed to various soundtracks and tribute albums during this period, including a cover of "Police of Truth" for the Depeche Mode tribute album For the Masses. In 2003, they released their third studio album, Opaline, which included notable tracks like "Somewhere in the Middle" and "Angels or Devils". The band's live album, Live... Greetings from the Flow State, was released later that year. Their self-titled fourth album, Dishwalla, was launched in April 2005. After a hiatus starting in mid-2006, Dishwalla reunited in 2008 with Justin Fox as the new vocalist and continued touring. JR Richards pursued a solo career, releasing his debut album A Beautiful End in May 2009. The band released comeback album Juniper Road in December 2017.
