Dinosaur Jr.

Dinosaur Jr. is an American alternative rock band formed in Amherst, Massachusetts, in 1984 by guitarist/vocalist J Mascis, bassist/vocalist Lou Barlow, and drummer Murph. Originally known simply as Dinosaur, the trio independently released its self-titled debut album in 1985 before recording You're Living All Over Me (1987) with engineer Wharton Tiers. The album considerably raised the band's profile within the American underground, combining heavy distortion, punk energy, melodic songwriting, and Mascis' distinctive guitar solos. Third album Bug followed in 1988 and included "Freak Scene," which became one of the group's signature songs, while their cover of The Cure's "Just Like Heaven" also attracted attention. Following Barlow's departure, Dinosaur Jr. signed with a major label and continued under Mascis' leadership through albums including Green Mind (1991), Where You Been (1993), Without a Sound (1994), and Hand It Over (1997) before dissolving later that year. The original Mascis-Barlow-Murph lineup reunited in 2005 and returned to the studio for Beyond in 2007, beginning a productive second phase that also produced Farm (2009), I Bet on Sky (2012), and Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not (2016). Their 12th studio album, Sweep It Into Space, arrived in April 2021 and was followed by extensive touring. In 2023 and 2024, Dinosaur Jr. celebrated the 30th anniversary of Where You Been with performances of the album in full in London, Brooklyn, and other cities, while 2024 also brought a 15th-anniversary edition of Farm and a North American tour supporting Weezer alongside The Flaming Lips. Further anniversary concerts and touring continued through 2025, including shows marking 30 years of Without a Sound. In 2026, Dinosaur Jr. toured with Band of Horses and announced There Near, their first studio album in five years. Recorded largely by Mascis, Barlow, and Murph at Bisquiteen Studio in Amherst, the album was preceded by "Several Got Away" and "Blowin' Up" and was released through Jagjaguwar on August 28, 2026.
