Dan Ar Braz, born Daniel Le Bras on January 15, 1949 in Quimper, is an iconic French guitarist, composer and singer on the folk and Celtic scene. He began his career in the 1960s playing instrumental rock, influenced by guitarists such as Hank Marvin of the Shadows, before joining harpist Alan Stivell in 1971, with whom he helped popularize Breton music in Europe and beyond. With his electric guitar, he introduced rock sounds into the Celtic universe, creating an unprecedented bridge between tradition and modernity. In the 1970s and 1980s, he embarked on a solo career, collaborating with numerous musicians to develop a unique style blending Celtic melodies, folk-rock arrangements and atmospheric ambiences. In 1993, he founded the L'Héritage des Celtes project, a multinational ensemble featuring Breton, Irish, Scottish and Galician artists, which enjoyed huge popular success, including two Victoires de la Musique awards and a Eurovision appearance in 1996. His work, deeply marked by his attachment to Brittany, celebrates the Celtic landscape, memory and cultural identity, while remaining accessible and poetic. A discreet but major figure on the French music scene, Dan Ar Braz embodies a music that is both rooted and open, at the crossroads of folk, rock and oral tradition.
