Denez Prigent, or simply Denez, born Denis Prigent on February 17, 1966, in Santec, Finistère, France, is a French folk singer and songwriter renowned for his haunting interpretations of traditional Breton music and his innovative blending of ancient forms with contemporary sounds. He grew up immersed in the rich musical and linguistic heritage of his region, learning the Breton language and traditional singing styles from an early age. He became particularly known for kan ha diskan, a call-and-response vocal style traditionally used in Breton folk dances, which he adapted for modern audiences by incorporating atmospheric electronics, ambient textures, and poetic, often socially conscious lyrics. Prigent’s music spans several decades and is marked by a deep respect for tradition alongside fearless experimentation. Albums such as Ar Gouriz Koar in 1993 and Irvi in 2000 showcase his mastery of Breton vocal techniques, while works like Sarac’h (2003) and An enchanting garden: Ul liorzh vurzudhus (2015) demonstrate his ability to fuse folk roots with contemporary instrumentation, including synthesizers, electric guitar, and percussion. His themes often explore identity, history, spirituality, and the human connection to the natural and cultural landscape of Brittany. Other albums include Me 'zalc'h ennon ur fulenn aour (1997), Live holl a-gevret! (live recording, 2002), the soundtrack for Black Hawk Down (2002), In unison with the stars: A-unvan gant ar stered (2016), Mil hent - Mille Chemins (2018), Stur an avel (2021), and Ur mor a zaeloù (2022). Over the decades, Prigent has performed extensively in France and internationally, and his contributions to Breton music have been recognized through various awards, including multiple prizes at the Kan ar Bobl festival. In 2025, he returned with Toenn vor - Chants des Sept Mers, including traditional Breton sea shanties.
