Black Sheep

American hip hop duo Black Sheep, from Queens, New York, was formed in 1989 by William "Mista Lawnge" McLean and Andres "Dres" Vargas. The duo met as teenagers in Sanford, North Carolina, where their families had relocated. Black Sheep debuted in 1991 with the hit song "Flavor of the Month" and later released their first album, A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing, which gained them praise for its unique rhythms and intelligent lyrics. The album charted three times on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in 1992 with "The Choice Is Yours (Revisited)" and "Strobelite Honey" which charted at position 6 and 1 respectively. Black Sheep was also featured on the remix of Vanessa Williams' single "Work to Do". The group's relationship with their label, Mercury/PolyGram, allowed Dres to establish a boutique label called One Love. Their second album, Non-Fiction, was released in 1994 but received poor promotion and lackluster sales, leading to the group's disbandment shortly after. In 2006, Dres released an online-only album titled 8wm/novakane under the name Black Sheep, although Mista Lawnge was not involved. Notable achievements include "The Choice Is Yours (Revisited)" being ranked number 74 on VH1's 100 Greatest Hip Hop Songs in 2008 and featured in a commercial for the 2010 Kia Soul.
