Beyond

Founded in Hong Kong in 1983, Beyond is a rock band formed by Wong Ka Kui (lead vocals) and Yip Sai Wing (drums), William Tang (guitar) and Lee Wing Chiu (bass), with Paul Wong (lead guitar) joining the band in 1985. Self-releasing their first album Goodbye My Dreams, the band performed at several small festivals releasing their second album Arabian Dancing Girls in 1987, followed by hit song “Great Land” (1988), winning them several awards. Their success continued with several albums released between 1987 and 1990 with their socially conscious track “Glorious Years” from the band’s eighth album, triple-platinum certified Party of Fate, considered to be a signature song for the band in years to come. In 1991, Beyond released another song dedicated to world peace, the powerful anthem “Amani” with critically acclaimed 1992 album Continue the Revolution attracting an large international audience. In January 1993, at the height of the band’s popularity, Wong fell from the stage during an appearance at a Japanese game show, falling into a coma and dying one week later, at age 31. The band remained together in his absence, releasing alternative rock albums 2nd Floor Back Suite (1994) and Please Let Go of Your Hands (1997) with the band disbanding after a 2003-2005 world tour, announcing that they would be leaving to pursue solo careers, reuniting for three concerts between 2008 and 2009. Since then, the band’s music has been used for social and political movements throughout the country.
