Born Abbas Hamad in Paris on May 27, 1987, Bas is a French rapper who has made his career in the United States. Born into a Sudanese family, he grew up in France and Qatar, before his parents moved to Jamaica, in the Queens district of New York. Following the release of two mixtapes, Quarter Water Raised, Vols 1 & 2 in 2011 and 2013, he came to the attention of J. Cole, who signed him to his Dreamville label, affiliated with Interscope Records. He successively recorded the albums Last Winter (2014) and Too High to Riot (2016), with a first appearance by the band The Hics, which reached No. 49 on the Billboard 200. The third album Milky Way (2018), charting at No. 35, features collaborations with ASAP Ferg, Ari Lennox, Lion Babe and J. Cole. It was followed by the EPs Spilled Milk (2019) and [BUMP] Pick Me Up (2022), then the album We Only Talk About Real Shit When We're Fucked Up (2023), with guest appearances by AJ Tracey, Adekunle Gold, Amaarae, ASAP Ferg, Blxckie, FKJ and Sha Sha. 2025 saw the release of Melanchronica, credited to Bas & The Hics.
