Babes in Toyland

Babes in Toyland was an American punk rock group formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1987. The original lineup consisted of Kat Bjelland on vocals and guitar, Lori Barbero on drums, and Michelle Leon on bass. The group's initial lineup featured Chris Holetz and Cindy Russell, who were later replaced by Courtney Love and Leon respectively. The band released its debut single “Dust Cake Boy” in 1989, followed by its debut studio album, Spanking Machine, in April 1990. The group gained underground success and toured with Sonic Youth in 1990. Their second studio album, Fontanelle, was released in 1992 and featured the song “Bruise Violet”. The album sold around 200,000 copies in the United States alone. In 1993, the group performed at Lollapalooza alongside acts including Primus and Alice in Chains. Their other releases include the EPs To Mother (1991) and Painkillers (1993). After releasing their third studio album, Nemesisters, in May 1995, the members became inactive in 1997 and disbanded in 2001. The group later resumed activity from 2014 to 2020.
