Agua Marina, a Peruvian cumbia band, was founded on August 30, 1976, in Sechura, Piura. The group originated from the Quiroga Querevalú family and their musical talents were nurtured during their secondary education at Colegio San Martín de Sechura. The brothers José and Manuel Quiroga Querevalú initially performed with local bands before forming Agua Marina. Their debut performance occurred on August 30, 1976, at a dance event organized by the Committee of Ladies of the Civil Guard in Sechura. Agua Marina's breakthrough came in 1986 with their album Baila Suavecito. The band gained regional fame and released several albums throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, including Muchacha (1990), Porque Te Quiero (1991), and Siete Noches (1992). Their national success began in 1994 with the album Amanecer, which included the song "Ay Penar Penar". The band's popularity surged in 1999 with the hit single "Tu amor fue una mentira", which topped national charts. This period also marked their first major concert in Lima, drawing over 30,000 attendees and leading to a European tour. Notable collaborations include versions of Alejandro Sanz's songs on Directo al Corazón (2008). In 2023, Agua Marina performed "El teléfono" at the live concert of Grupo 5. The band continued to release albums such as 42 Años in September 2018.
