213 was formed in Longâ¯Beach, California, by the trio of Snoopâ¯Dogg, Warrenâ¯G, and Nateâ¯Dogg, who had already established themselves in the West Coast hipâhop scene. The groupâs name, pronounced âTwo One Three,â references the original 213 telephone area code that covered Longâ¯Beach. Their breakthrough came with the single "Ain't No Fun (If the Homies Can't Have None)" from Snoopâ¯Doggâs 1993 debut Doggystyle, which showcased the trioâs collaborative chemistry. In 1994 the group released the St.â¯Ides EP, but no further group material followed until their sole studio album The Hard Way, issued on 17â¯Augustâ¯2004 under TVT and Doggystyle; the album peaked at number 4 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and spawned singles such as "Groupie Luv" and "So Fly". Throughout the 2000s the members continued to appear on each otherâs solo projects and in various compilations, but 213 remained a oneâalbum act. The groupâs activity ceased with the death of Nateâ¯Dogg on 15â¯Marchâ¯2011 in Longâ¯Beach, California, from complications of multiple strokes, effectively disbanding the ensemble. The album The Hard Way achieved Gold certification in the United States, reflecting its commercial impact within the West Coast rap genre.
