Yashiki Takajin

Takajin Yashiki (real name Takaji Yashiki) was born on 5 October 1949 in Nishinari‑ku, Osaka, Japan, and emerged as a singer rooted in the soul‑influenced pop scene of the 1970s. After beginning his career in Kyoto’s Gion district, he relocated to Shimokitazawa in 1980, where his debut single "Suna no Juujika" in 1981 became the theme for the first Mobile Suit Gundam film and sold thirteen thousand copies. Yashiki’s discography progressed with the 1977 album Itoshi no girl, followed by the 1993, Tokyo and the compilation, Kettei ban Yashiki Takajin, later that year; he continued to release Catch Me in 1995 and the 2007 collection Essential Best Takajin Yashiki. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he recorded Osaka‑centric hits such as "Yappa Suki Yanen", "Osaka Koi Monogatari", and "Tokyo", solidifying his reputation as a Kansai performer. A noted television personality, Yashiki maintained a distinct presence in regional media, often eschewing Tokyo broadcasts. In January 2012, he announced a diagnosis of esophageal cancer, leading to a temporary withdrawal from the public eye; he returned briefly in 2013 before passing away on 3 January 2014, leaving a legacy of culturally resonant recordings and regional influence.
