Born on March 16, 1983 in Tassin-la-Demi-Lune in the Rhône region of France, Yoann Lemoine began his career as a photographer and advertising director, after studying animation and design. And if he makes a name for himself in the music world, it's first as a director for clips by Katy Perry, Yelle and Moby. In 2011, he launched himself as an artist, under the name Woodkid. He immediately made a name for himself with the aesthetics of his videos, such as the very dark one for "Iron", featured on the EP of the same name. His debut album, The Golden Age, released in March 2013, reveals a varied musical universe, between pop, folk, electro and alternative rock. It was followed by Desierto, in 2016, the soundtrack to Jónas Cuarón's film of the same name. The same year, Woodkid composed the material for the Ellis EP with pianist Nils Frahm. Woodkid's second proper album, S16, was not released until 2020, after a seven-year wait. Described as less accessible by its author, it is based on two singles, "Goliath" and "Pale Yellow". After the 2021 release of the Powerplant EP, Woodkid returned with the single "To Ash & Blood" (2024) for the soundtrack to the video game Arcane, and the album Woodkid for Death Stranding: On the Beach (2025), the soundtrack to Hideo Kojima's video game of the same name, featuring a collaboration with Bryce Dessner and a version of the single "To the Wilder" with Elle Fanning.
